The 10th of Muharram: Why Ashura Is So Important

The 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura, is one of the most sacred days in Islam.
It's a day filled with meaning about standing up for justice, trusting in Allah, and showing mercy through action. Ashura reminds us of two powerful stories: the rescue of Prophet Musa (AS) and the sacrifice of Imam Hussain (RA).
And it reminds us of what we can do today: fast, reflect, and give.
Why Do We Fast on Ashura?
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"Fasting the day of Ashura, I hope Allah will wipe away the sins of the year before." (Sahih Muslim)
That means one day of fasting can earn you the reward of an entire year's forgiveness. SubhanAllah.
The Prophet ﷺ also recommended fasting a second day, either the 9th or the 11th of Muharram, on the same day as Ashura. This is a way to follow his tradition and honor the legacy of Prophet Musa (AS).
What Happens on Ashura?
Ashura marks the day Allah saved Prophet Musa (AS) and his people from Pharaoh. As the sea trapped them, Allah parted the waters and made a way. It was a day of victory where faith overcame fear.
Later in history, Ashura also became the day when Imam Hussain (RA), the Prophet's ﷺ grandson, was martyred in Karbala. He stood for truth, even when he stood alone.
Ashura is about both courage and compassion. And it's about choosing what's right, even when it's hard.
What Makes Muharram So Special?
Muharram isn't just the first month of the Islamic year; it's one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Qur'an. Good deeds done during this time are multiplied. So are the opportunities to gain Allah's reward.
The Prophet ﷺ called it "the month of Allah."
That makes it a perfect time to set new goals, renew your intentions, and give back.
How Can You Spend the Day of Ashura?
Ashura is more than just a day to fast. It's a day to connect with Allah, to care for others, and to do the things that bring peace to your heart.
Here are a few ways to make the most of it:
- Fast on the 10th of Muharram (and ideally on the 9th or 11th too)
- Give Sadaqah or Zakat to help someone in need
- Make dua for yourself, your family, and the Ummah
- Reflect on the stories of Musa (AS) and Hussain (RA)
- Teach your children about courage, justice, and faith
If you'd like to start with giving, you can donate your Zakat here or give Sadaqah where it's most needed.

When Is Ashura in 2025?
Ashura is expected to fall on Monday, July 7, 2025, based on the moon sighting.
That means now is the time to prepare.
Plan your fast. Make your du'as. Give before the day comes so that your reward is waiting multiplied, inshAllah.
Why Giving on Ashura Matters
When you give on the 10th of Muharram, your charity is not just another donation; it is a special act of generosity. It becomes part of something bigger.
You're honoring the struggle of Prophet Musa (AS). You're remembering the courage of Imam Hussain (RA). And you're helping someone who might not eat today unless you step in.
Even a small gift can have a big impact.
"Whoever relieves a believer's distress, Allah will relieve his distress on the Day of Resurrection."
(Muslim)
