Gaza's Devastation One Year Later
The conflict in Gaza has reached a devastating milestone—one year of ongoing destruction, displacement, and unimaginable suffering for its people.
The Scale of the Destruction
Over the past year, the people of Gaza have faced relentless devastation. Key statistics, according to UN estimates, illustrate the staggering toll of the conflict:
- Nearly 42,000 lives have been lost, over half of them women and children.
- More than 96,000 people have been wounded, with many more still trapped under rubble or in inaccessible areas.
- 90% of Gaza's 2.3 million people have been displaced, with many forced to relocate multiple times.
Living Conditions in Crisis
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has left its people living in severe conditions. Many displaced families in Gaza are struggling to find emergency food and shelter in Gaza; with basic needs becoming more critical, displaced families crowd into tent camps along the Mediterranean coast, where they face severe shortages of basic needs:
- 96% of the population experiences acute food insecurity.
- Hundreds of thousands live without access to electricity, running water, or proper sanitation.
- Hunger and disease are rampant, exacerbating the already dire situation.
Gaza's Conflict Impact on Infrastructures
The conflict has also caused massive destruction to Gaza's infrastructure. According to UN reports:
- Over 92% of Gaza's main roads and 84% of health facilities have been either damaged or destroyed.
- 70% of water and sanitation plants have been affected, including all five wastewater treatment plants, desalination facilities, and sewage systems.
Millions have been left without access to clean water or proper sanitation, further deepening the humanitarian crisis.
The Psychological Impact on Children in Gaza
Children in Gaza are enduring severe hardships beyond the immediate dangers of conflict, with the ongoing crisis causing profound psychological and developmental challenges. Chronic anxiety, PTSD, and depression are rampant due to displacement, loss of loved ones, and constant fear.
- 95% of Palestinian children exhibit mental health challenges such as depression, hyperactivity, a tendency to isolate themselves.
- A staggering 68% of children report struggling with sleep disturbance
- with 78% identifying the sound of warplanes as their primary source of fear.
