Embracing Sunnah to stay cool in the Summer

Mahnoor Rana

The Sunnah of our Prophet (PBUH) includes practical advice on protecting oneself from extreme weather, such as heat, which is particularly relevant in many parts of the world. These include outdoor tips, eating tips, and how to be grateful for what you have and not misusing the accessories and technologies we have to stay cool.

Tip for going outdoors

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) emphasized the importance of physical activity, making it an integral part of a healthy lifestyle in Islam. Regular exercise not only enhances physical health but also contributes to mental and spiritual well-being.

While outdoor activities offer enjoyment, they necessitate careful scheduling in the summer heat.

  1. Time Your Activities Wisely: Schedule outdoor activities for cooler times of the day, like early mornings or late evenings. This strategy sidesteps midday peak heat, lowering the risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration.
  1. Seek Shade: Utilizing shade structures like umbrellas or canopies can significantly reduce temperatures and protect from harmful UV rays. Taking regular breaks in shaded or indoor areas helps cool down the body and avoid heat-related illnesses.
  1. Apply Sunscreen: Applying broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Always use sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays to ensure comprehensive protection while enjoying the outdoors.

Foods and Drinks to Keep You Cool

The Prophet (PBUH) advised against overeating. He said, "The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls to keep him alive. If he must fill it, then one-third for food, one-third for drink, and one-third for air" (Ibn Majah).

Your diet significantly influences your ability to manage summer heat. Consuming water-abundant foods, steering clear of heavy meals, and relishing refreshing drinks aid in keeping you cool and hydrated.

  1. Eat Water-Rich Foods: Including hydrating foods such as watermelon, cucumber, and strawberries in your diet enhances water intake. For example, watermelon, with 92% water and an abundance of vitamins A and C, is one of the most hydrating foods.
  1. Avoid Heavy Meals: During hot weather, opt for lighter meals that are easier to digest, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Heavy meals can increase body temperature, making it harder to stay cool.
  1. Refreshing Beverages: Stay hydrated and refreshed with beverages like strawberry smoothies, lemonade, and lassi. A strawberry smoothie made with fresh strawberries, a banana, and a splash of coconut water is not only hydrating but also nutrient-packed.

Keeping these things in mind will not only help you be cool in summer but also follow the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as these are the ideas he pushed for in his lifestyle. Another sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) used to eat slowly, thoroughly chewing his food, and he encouraged eating together as a family.

He (PBUH) said, "Eat together and do not eat separately, for the blessing is associated with the company" (Ibn Majah).

Being Grateful and Using what we are given:

O you who have believed, eat from the good [i.e., lawful] things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship. [2:172]

While we usually take only having a means of substance or having a job, or kids as a means of blessing. And indeed, they are blessing, but the technology we have built for ourselves to use- that includes clothing, means of traveling, and means of changing the temperature of the environment are all also blessings for Allah(swt). So, nor should we abuse them by overusing them, or by not using them and putting ourselves through physical hardship.  Because, in either case, we are misusing what we are given and taking it for granted. Also think of all those who do not have these blessings, whether they be people of Yemen, Gaza, or Pakistan. Let’s be mindful while remembering them in how we use our facilities.

Use Air Conditioning Efficiently

Maintaining comfort in your home often comes down to the efficient use of air conditioning. Setting the thermostat around 78 degrees (24-27°C) balances coolness and energy conservation. This minor adjustment significantly decreases energy consumption, ensuring comfort isn’t compromised.

Stay Hydrated

In heat waves, hydration is crucial for body temperature regulation. Regularly sipping water, even without thirst, maintains hydration levels. Aim to consume at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily for optimal body function. Awareness of dehydration symptoms is also essential; initial indicators like thirst, fatigue, headaches, and dry mouth could escalate into dizziness, muscle cramps, and nausea if neglected.

Wear Light Clothing

Dressing appropriately can make a world of difference when trying to stay cool,. opt for light-colored, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. These materials allow better air circulation and help maintain a normal body temperature, making it easier to cope with the heat.

Cool Showers and Baths

Cool showers or baths efficiently reduce body temperature, providing instant relief from the heat and gradually cooling the core body temperature. This straightforward method ensures comfort on hot days.

In summer vulnerable groups like older adults, infants, children, pregnant women, and individuals with medical conditions are prone to suffer from dehydration and heat stroke. They also higher risk of collapsing and fainting due to heat. So, ensuring that they are hydrated and cool is paramount for their health and well-being.
