When Does Dhull Hijjah 2024 Start?

 Dhul-Hijjah is expected to begin on Friday, June 7th 2024. A new crescent will shine in the sky, bringing with it immense blessings. 

Why do Muslims celebrate Dhull Hijjah?

The month of Dhul Hijjah is the month of pilgrimage known as hajj. Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and thus is critically important. This 5-6 days long pilgrimage is honored and revered by Muslims across the world because it once in a life-time chance to visit the house of Allah.

What makes the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah so important in Islam?

Allah swears an oath by them, in the Quran. And swearing an oath by something is indicative of its importance and great benefit.

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): "By the dawn; by the ten nights" [al-Fajr 89:1-2]. Ibn 'Abbas, Ibn al-Zubayr, Mujahid and others of the earlier and later generations said that this refers to the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.

Therefore these days are highly rewarding for righteous deeds such as prayer, fasting, charity, and Quran recitation.

Is fasting during Dhul Hijjah mandatory for Muslims?

Fasting during Dhul Hijjah is not mandatory for Muslims, but it is highly recommended sunnah, especially on the Day of Arafah, as it brings significant rewards and forgiveness. Allah bestows forgiveness on more people on these days than on any other day.

What are some specific dhikr phrases I should focus on during Dhul Hijjah?

Focus on reciting phrases such as takbeer (Allahu Akbar), tahleel (Laa ilaha ill Allah), and tahmeed (Alhamdulillah) frequently during Dhul Hijjah, as they help maintain a state of worship throughout the day. As well as saying istagfar, as much as possible.

Can Qurbani be performed at any time during Dhul Hijjah?

No, Qurbani should be performed after the Eid prayer, from the 10th to the 12th days of Dhul Hijjah, as per the sunnah of Prophet muhammad (PBUH). Sacrifice performed before Eid prayer does not count as qurbani/udiyah.

How can I preserve the spiritual momentum gained during these ten days throughout the year?

To maintain the spiritual momentum gained during these ten days, continue engaging in regular recitation of morning and evening dikhr continue to pray complete prayers(both sunnah and fard), stay in a state of purification, and perform frequent supplication. Additionally, prioritize actions with lasting benefits for the Hereafter and avoid wasting time on activities that don't contribute to your spiritual growth.
