5 Steps to Improve Studying This Winter

Mahnoor Rana

Winter can be challenging to study in as you cozy up in sweaters and socks to stay warm, consistently fight the lack of sleep, and drink far too much coffee to compensate for your ever-wandering mind. Winter stress can be particularly overwhelming for students.

Three key strategies are essential to effectively overcome this stress: preparing for final weeks efficiently, stockpiling notes and sustenance, and studying with classmates or friends.

Winter stress is not just about battling depression, which thrives in isolation, but also contending with the increased susceptibility to viruses. The cold, crisp weather provides an ideal environment for viruses to spread and multiply. As the final weeks approach, here are some vital considerations:

  • Pre-plan Study Sessions with Intentional Rest Periods:

Whether it's blocks of 4 by 4 or 25 min working with 5 min breaks in between, be intentional about studying and resting. It will prevent you from burning out and exhausting yourself.

  • Hydrate and Stay Rejuvenated:

Keep a water bottle within reach to stay hydrated throughout your study sessions. While enjoying coffee or tea is familiar, be mindful of their dehydrating effects. Adequate hydration keeps you refreshed and helps prevent illness and maintain focus.

  • Create a Comfortable Study Environment:

Choose a well-lit and comfortable study spot with ample space for yourself and your study group. Layer up to stay warm during extended periods of sitting. During the breaks, a quick walk around campus or room to improve blood circulation after prolonged sitting can cause posture issues and cramps.

  • Eat Nutritious Meals on Time:

Resist the temptation to rely on junk foods like chocolate and chips. While they may provide a temporary energy boost, it's short-lived, and the subsequent crash can hinder your focus. Opt for healthier snacks like nuts and maintain a balanced, hearty meal.

  • Manage Anxiety and Prioritize Mental Health:

Control anxiety by being mindful of your mental well-being. Avoid overburdening yourself with tasks that cannot realistically be accomplished in a day. Prioritize productivity, as unfinished tasks can contribute to stress, ultimately disrupting a healthy study schedule.

In navigating the challenges of winter and the pressures of final exams, these strategies aim to promote a balanced and sustainable approach to studying. Taking care of your physical and mental well-being is imperative during this demanding period.
