What Is the Difference Between Zakat and Sadaqah?

Hanen Musa

As Muslims, we give often, but are we always clear on what we’re giving?

Many people use the terms Zakat and Sadaqah interchangeably. But while both are beautiful forms of charity in Islam, they carry different meanings, rules, and spiritual weight.

Understanding the difference between Zakat and Sadaqah allows you to give intentionally, and unlock the full reward promised in the Qur’an and Sunnah.

Quick Answer: What’s the Difference Between Zakat and Sadaqah?

Zakat is a mandatory charity, 2.5% of your wealth, once a year, if you meet the threshold.
Sadaqah is a voluntary gift, you can give it anytime, in any amount, for any reason.

What Is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It's not just charity, it's purification. A way to cleanse your wealth and soul, while helping those most in need.

  • Obligatory for Muslims who own wealth above the nisab
  • Calculated at 2.5% of qualifying savings and assets
  • Can only be given to certain Qur’anic categories (e.g., the poor, orphans, debtors)
  • Must be given with the intention (niyyah) of Zakat

 What Is Sadaqah?

Sadaqah is open-handed. It’s the quiet gift you make when no one is watching. The kind words, the warm smile, the meal you provide without hesitation.

There’s no minimum. No deadline. No restriction on who can receive it.

You can give:

  • A small donation after Jumu’ah
  • A recurring gift each month
  • A water well or school kit in someone’s memory
  • Or even a kind gesture, yes, that’s Sadaqah too

When Should You Give Zakat or Sadaqah?

There’s no “perfect time” to give, because every day is a chance to earn a reward.

  • Zakat is given annually. Many Muslims choose Ramadan, Dhul Hijjah, or a set lunar date.
  • Sadaqah can be given in moments of joy, gratitude, hardship, or hope. Anytime your heart moves you.

Giving during sacred days, like Ashura, Laylat al-Qadr, or the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah, only increases the reward.

Why Charity Matters in Islam

It’s not just about checking a box. It’s about impact.

Zakat ensures your wealth helps those who are owed. Sadaqah allows you to go above and beyond, supporting clean water, education, food, and health.
