Six Days of Shawwal: Meaning, Importance, and How to Fast Them

Hanen Musa

Shawwal is the tenth month of the Islamic calendar, following Ramadan. The word “Shawwal” comes from the Arabic root shāla, meaning “to lift” or “carry.” Spiritually, it’s seen as a time to carry the good habits of Ramadan forward.

What Is the Significance of Shawwal?

The month of Shawwal holds deep spiritual meaning in Islam. It begins right after Ramadan and begins with Eid al- Fitr. Shawwal offers a unique opportunity to continue earning immense reward and staying close to Allah (SWT).

One of the most beloved Sunnah practices in this sacred month is fasting for six days of Shawwal. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that fasting these six days after completing Ramadan is like fasting the entire year.

Understanding the importance of Shawwal helps us appreciate how this month can extend the blessings of Ramadan and keep us on a path of devotion and discipline.

Why Fasting the Six Days of Shawwal Matters

Abu Aiyub Al-Ansari (RAA) narrated that The Messenger of Allah () said:
