What is a Prophetic Qurbani/Udhiyah ?
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was known for his generosity. An example of his generosity was when he would perform an additional Qurbani/Udhiyah 'for those within his ummah unable to offer sacrifice, those who attest to the Oneness of Allah and His Prophethood' (Tabarani & Ahmad).
This tradition became known as the prophetic Qurbani/Udhiyah. The Prophet (SAW) advised his son in law, Ali (May Allah be pleased with him), to uphold this practice. Hanash (May Allah be pleased with him) asked Ali regarding his sacrifice of two rams, to which Ali responded: 'The Messenger of Allah has instructed me to offer a sacrifice on his behalf, so I comply.' (Abu Dawud) After this, the beautiful Sunnah gained popularity and persisted through the early Muslim community.
Today, many have forgotten this noble act. As followers of the Prophet Muhammad, it is our obligation to revive his Sunnah and perpetuate his legacy.
The Quran affirms the Prophet (pbuh) as an exemplary model for humanity: "Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example to follow." (Quran 33:21) Therefore, we should aim to seize every opportunity to follow his example to gain abundant rewards.
In line with all Sunnah practices, there lies divine wisdom and benefit in offering an additional Qurbani/Udhiyah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized, "None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself." (Bukhari) This additional sacrifice not only provides impoverished families a nutritious meal to enjoy this Eid ul Adha but also strengthens the bonds of brotherhood, fostering compassion and generosity among Muslims.
