What is Ramadan?
The Month of Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic lunar calendar, marking the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Ramadan comes around only once a year and is the best time to seek Allah's love, pray to Him, and strengthen our faith. From dawn to dusk, Muslims refrain from food and drink, turning to worship and acts of charity.
Fasting during Ramadan enables individuals to empathize with the millions of people worldwide enduring poverty and famine, and helps foster a sense of humility and gratitude for Allah's blessings. As the month concludes, Zakat contributions are made, followed by the joyous celebration of Eid ul-Fitr with family and friends, marked by feasting and the exchange of gifts among loved ones.
FIVE PILLARS OF ISLAM
The Five Pillars of Islam are the five core practices that all Muslims should follow. They are:
Shahadah - the reciting and profession of the Islamic faith.
Salah – five daily prayers and performing ritual cleansing or wudu.
Zakat - giving to charity based on one’s wealth to help those less fortunate. Donations during Ramadan often hold much greater reward for the donor.
Sawm – the process of fasting during the month of Ramadan. There are exceptions as to who can take part in fasting, but it is expected if you are of good health and sound mind.
Hajj – the pilgrimage to Mecca, which every able-bodied Muslim must do at least once in their lifetime.
WHEN IS RAMADAN 2024 USA ?
Ramadan will officially begin when the Islamic month of Shaban ends and the new moon of Ramadan is sighted. All dates and times are subject to confirmation and sighting of the moon however, this year Ramadan is expected to begin on Monday, 11 March 2024.
WHY FASTING IS SO IMPORTANT
Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is obligatory upon all capable Muslims, specifically those who are mature and in good health, to observe fasting from sunrise to sunset throughout the month of Ramadan.
Fasting during Ramadan purifies the soul, increases spiritual awareness, and fosters compassion for the poor. The hours spent refraining from water and food are a reminder of how precious a gift it is to have easy access to good food and clean water. By abstaining from the basic blessing we have been given, Muslims throughout the globe demonstrate devotion to Allah and gratitude for His blessings.
Eid Ul-Fitr
2024 Eid ul-Fitr is likely to occur on 10 April 2024, depending on the sighting of the moon. However, as with each day in the Islamic calendar, the next day begins after the Maghrib prayer (just after sunset) of the same day. Therefore, Eid technically begins after the moon has been sighted (likely on 9 April), but inshallah will have a more definitive date as we get closer to Eid.
ZAKAT & WHY THERE ARE DONATIONS DURING RAMADAN
Zakat is an obligatory act of charity and is the third pillar of the Islamic faith. Giving to charity is a huge part of everyday life for Muslims.
In Islam, giving to charity is a great deed at any time of year. However, in the month of Ramadan, donating Zakat is multiplied by manifold blessings and rewards for the donor.
Zakat is an obligatory charity that everyone must give if they meet certain earning/profits criteria; it's payable any time of the year. However, many people wait for Ramadan because it’s a time of great blessing. It's a means to strengthen our relationship with Allah, earn clean earnings, protect us from harm, and receive endless rewards by helping those in need.
How to Calculate Zakat
Zakat is due on all wealth and assets that are held above a certain threshold, also known as the nisab. Zakat is calculated at 2.5% of all total wealth above the nisab value and takes into consideration:
- Gold and silver
- Cash in hand and bank accounts.
- Pensions
- Investment property
- Stocks and shares
- Money lent out.
- Business stock
- Agriculture produces.
All wealth must have been maintained for one lunar year before you pay Zakat.
